LUMBER.DIRECTORY: Glossary of Lumber Terms

  • (Please note that these may not be "definitions", but rather my explanation of terms as I would communicate these ideas to someone brand new to our industry)
  • (Also, these are going to be a work in progress, as they come up organically as we add to our site)
  1. S4S: Surfaced by a planer mill on all four sides. This means all four edges have been run to a smooth surface by the mill. Also referred to as "dressing" lumber
  2. S1S2E: Surfaced one side, two edges
  3. CVG: Clear vertical grain.  A very high grade applicable to materials such as Western Red Cedar and Doug Fir.  Clear refers to a bear absence of knots and the vertical grain descriptor refers to the material having tight grain patterns.  This type of grain growth is only found on the outer rings of mature trees; the rings get more narrow and when milled create a tight vertical grain appearance as well as an upgrade in strength due to tightSgrain structure.
